Know the ropes - Tips for buying or selling a boat online

Toronto (Ontario), June 1, 2010 – As Canada’s six million boaters prepare to set sail this summer, landlubbers and seasoned skippers are looking to trusted online boat references for the perfect cruise and sale. Two out of five boat shoppers are first-time buyers, according to 2010 research done by Ipsos Reid for, one of Canada’s largest online sources of new and used recreational vehicles. Canadian boat buyers and sellers are co-captains of a marine industry worth $26.8 billion.1

With so much buying and selling out there, navigating the sea of new and resale boats can make the heartiest sailor somewhat seasick. Below are some seaworthy buying, selling and boating tips to calm online waters.

Know what’s hot. Buyers usually consider four brands of boats when looking online. Sea-Doo, Bayliner, Sea Ray and Lund are top online searches yet most buyers reel in a fishing boat when it is time to hit the water. Based on a recent survey, Canadian boating purchase preferences are fishing boats (34 per cent), followed by powerboats (19 per cent), sailboats (11 per cent), pontoon boats (9 per cent), and yachts/cruisers (6 per cent).

Go online before you go onboard. Although half of boat buyers grew up around boats, it is still wise to refresh your memory about new styles, brands and technology. Considering nearly half of repeat boat buyers wait more than seven years before buying another vessel, it is imperative that buyers and sellers know current safety and licensing regulations. Service Canada and Transport Canada offer excellent, up-to-date boating information.

Advertise a boat for sale online. Two out of five buyers on are first-time boat buyers so they are looking for ads that are easy to read and understand. If you advertise a boat for sale on the site, state clearly the make and the model, the length of boat, age, engine/horsepower specifications, availability of aftermarket parts/upgrades, model features, and above all price. As pictures are key to ensuring a boat sale, make sure to include one in your ad.

Practice good seamanship. Boats are a great family investment but not everyone can be at the helm. For youth under 16 years of age, there are horsepower restrictions and supervision regulations. Having a Pleasure Craft Operator Card or a Certificate of Completion from a Canadian Power & Sails Squadron course proves you are safe boater. Remember to take into account the age of your crew before buying a boat so you avoid getting into hot water.

Register for pleasure. Every pleasure craft, whether new or used, with 10 horsepower or more must have a registered licence number displayed on the bow. When buying a new boat, make sure it has a Hull Serial Number (HIN) and a Transport Canada compliance notice if the boat has a motor or could have one installed. Pre-owned boats should have an HIN number if built or imported after August 1981. Also, to avoid any unpleasant situations, boats should be certified by an independent surveyor before selling or buying one. Ask you local marine club or store to find a resource.
